About Bridge #2

Bridge #2 was "rediscovered" on January 26, 2020, during the second trek on the original trails. Unlike Bridge #1, this bridge was found in very rough shape β€” it had collapsed at some point over the years, a casualty of time and the elements in the Florida wetlands.

The discovery of Bridge #2 reinforced just how much work would be needed to restore the trail system, and became one of the key early rebuilding projects undertaken by the volunteer group.

As Found β€” Collapsed & Deteriorated

When rediscovered on January 26, 2020, Bridge #2 was in very rough shape. The decking had warped, rotted boards were missing, posts had broken off at the base, and sections had fully collapsed over the creek. It was clear a complete rebuild was needed.

The Rebuild

A strong volunteer crew showed up to tear out the old structure and build Bridge #2 from scratch. The crew selfie says it all β€” a full team, fresh lumber, and a bridge nearly done.

Before & After Staining

Once built, the bridge was left to dry before being hand-sanded and finished with multiple coats of stain β€” the same treatment given to all the bridges and structures on the trail system.

Left: fresh lumber right after construction. Right: the finished bridge after staining. The transformation from collapsed ruin to this is entirely the work of volunteers.

All the amenities of the trail system are maintained by volunteers. Students can receive Bright Futures Service hours for helping. Follow trail events and contact the trail leaders at the Trails of River Hills Facebook page.
